CAMP AKIBA HISTORY
Camp Akiba, now in its 40th year, is a camp sponsored by Temple
Akiba, a reform synagogue in Culver City, CA. While initially
it was a camp solely for the children of Temple Akiba, over the
years it has expanded to include children from Beth Shir Sholom
(Santa Monica), Temple Menorah (Redondo Beach), Adat Elohim (Thousand
Oaks), and other children from throughout the Jewish community.
Many of the Camp Akiba campers are second generation campers.
Many of the campers return every year and 95% of the camp staff
have grown up in the program. Their commitment is truly one of
many years of dedication to the program. Most are volunteers who
spend a good part of their summer meeting and planning great activities
for the campers. They then dedicate their time during camp to
making sure that every camper has a safe, fun, wonderful Jewish
experience.
Camp Akiba shapes the lives of children. It offers long lasting
friendships, a chance to gain independence and self confidence,
and truly engrains within them a long lasting sense of Jeiwsh
identity.
